Wonder Woman for Empowerment: The Female form in comics

Coming affront about the abuse that is inherent in the comic book industry is kind of scary, however, with Wonder Woman being chosen as the face of Female Empowerment by the UN, we need to at least consider some things that have been wrong with the industry in the past and in the present. Let us first take the case in point, Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman when she first started had very subtle sexual themes playing throughout, this became more and more apparent in some places. However, that in itself is not bad, but, somewhere Wonder Woman’s characterisation was that of a pin-up girl at first, even though progressively she left that baggage and became the Diana Prince we adore today. However, this also coincides with the fact that the comic book industry itself has many superheroines tailor-made to appeal to the male gaze. The overzealous breasts, the low necklines, the long legs, everything to create a cornerstone for what they believe is the underlying sexual appeal of the female form.

Exploring Artists : Moebius

I found Moebius when I found that he had worked with Jodorowsky on “The Incal”. Now Jodorowsky is one of my favourite filmmakers, and I really really dug “Borgia”; another set of comics he had worked on. What stupefied me about Moebius from the get go was the richness of his art. “the Incal” was not an easy comic to draw, the characters were vast (Think of the bar scene from the original Star Wars trilogy and multiply it by 10). But, far more than that, it was the fact the people who stopped into “Incal” would find that the book had influenced countless other stories along the way, to the point where you would be hard pressed to find a science fiction movie that has not used a scene from the book.

NerdyGeek’s 50 Best TV Shows of 2015

NerdyGeek’s 50 Best TV Shows - 2015

The 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons saw an increase in new comic superhero TV Shows and gave many of us reason to be excited about the new series and upcoming series over the next few years. The best of which have been the top four of our list. While The Flash is the best so far, Daredevil and Jessica Jones have redefined superhero TV shows, (Soon we could have every character asking for similar TV series), and Agent Carter was made us fall in love with Peggy Carter (if we weren’t already).

At the same time we saw some great non-superhero shows which blew our breath away. The Americans, The Brink, Game of Thrones, etc have turned us into maniac devotees of those shows. The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead scared the shit out of us.

With such great shows, and some shows which while good did screw up a bit (Arrow), we would like to proudly announce our first annual NerdyGeek’s 50 Best TV Shows of 2015”.

The TV Shows considered for selection were from Canada, India, UK, and USA.

NerdyGeek’s 27 Best Films of 2015

NerdyGeek’s 27 Best Films - 2015

2015 has been an emotional year, we were more swayed with emotions than entertainment, storytelling, and film-making techniques. It could be the fact that we sat through an entire “Furious 7” movie, only to end up crying like hell in the last few mins; or the importance of five basic emotions in all our lives and how they make us or break us in “Inside Out“; or the emotional trauma that Matt Damon goes through in “The Martian“, (Or the fact that Matt Damon has to be rescued again for the umpteenth time); or the joy of seeing a new episode of “Star Wars” and the death of an all time favourite character; I could go on about most of the films on the list, but you get the point.
